X Is For "Xunde" {Reed Or Palm Basket} | A To Z Challenge

As part of my ongoing efforts to learn Spanish, I'm highlighting a Spanish word each day during April as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I'm also sharing the random thoughts that pop into my head when I try to pronounce them.

****

Today's Spanish word is >>xunde<< (reed or palm basket). And now for some random thoughts:

1 - When I think about baskets, the Easter Bunny comes to mind. I always appreciated the chocolate he left me, although it did feel slightly weird to bite off a chocolate rabbit's head. Kind of like biting the hand that feeds you.

2 - There weren't a lot of Spanish words that start with "X" to choose from in my Spanish-English dictionary. Some of them seem to be derived from Greek (like xenofobia), or are loan words (like xerografia). From what I can tell, >>xunde<< is used in Mexican Spanish. Maybe it's derived from a native language, like Nahuatl.

3 - We use baskets for storage in our aft cabin. There's not a lot of space on a 34' sailboat, so sometimes you have to be creative when stowing stuff. You can read more about our other storage solutions on our sailboat here.

Do you have any creative storage solutions? What's your favorite word that starts with "X"?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!

  2. I just didn’t have time to do the A-Z challenge this year. Congratulations, you’re almost done. While X might not be used in a lot of Spanish words, it is used in a lot of Mayan words and in southern Mexico through Honduras, there is a lot of Mayan influence.

I got home last night after spending time in the Dry Tortugas and I wonder if you’ve sailed there? We camped on Garden Key (Ft. Jefferson) and paddled over to Loggerhead Key and around Bush and Long Keys and did a lot of snorkeling.

I am now mostly doing my blogging at this site: www.thepulpitandthepen.com. Come over if you get a chance.

  4. I cannot imagine how this is pronounced. Wonder what the origin is. I really like the sound of Mayan and Aztec words (like axolotl, which is a salamander I wish SO would let me keep). Meanwhile, I'm reminded of how after moving to this region I misspelled a local town's name. I figured 'Xenia' started with a Z as it's pronounced. A native corrected my error. Heh...

    1. I visited Xenia when I was a child, so I knew how to pronounce it. :-)

I wonder why your SO doesn't want an axolotl. They're pretty adorable and they don't shed fur everywhere.

  5. We have a 34 foot boat too and it has lots of storage. We only keep what we can store in storage. We don't live on our boat though to that's a big difference.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ♥

    1. It does make a difference not to have all of your life's possessions on your boat. Although living on a boat forces you to seriously downsize.

  6. I can imagine that storage is important to get right when living on the boat. Nice baskets.

    1. So important to get it right. And inevitably whatever you need for a particular project or recipe is way down at the bottom of a storage locker under tons of stuff :-)

  7. It looks so neat and tidy. We have similar storage problems in our caravan but we are not living in it full time. We find that packing for three months is the same as for a week. It is amazing how you can make do with less. Of course on a boat you would need more food as you can’t drive to the nearest shop.

    1. Looks can be deceiving :-)

When we're out cruising, we stock up on a lot of stuff beforehand. While you can buy food everywhere, it isn't always easy to get to a store and get what you need.

  9. A reed basket sounds like pretty storage, which you have. My thing is i just need less to store.

    1. Having less to store is the trick, but it's not always easy to downsize.

  10. I agree that some X words in Spanish derive from Nahuatl - there are a lot of X place names in Central America.

My favourite X word used to be xerox - when I was a journalist - but now it might be Xerarch as I live in the high desert.
