V Is For "Velero" {Sailboat} | A To Z Challenge

In my ongoing efforts to learn Spanish, I'm highlighting a Spanish word each day during April as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I'm also sharing the random thoughts that pop into my head when I try to pronounce them.

****

Today's Spanish word is >>velero<< (sailboat). And now for today's random thoughts:

1 - Velero would make a pretty name for a sailboat. We ended up giving our sailboat a silly name - Tickety Boo.

2 - When we bought out sailboat, it came with a handy >>Spanish for Cruisers<< book by Kathy Parsons. It's chock-full of vocabulary and phrases related to boat repair and maintenance. The kind of words that I don't really have an interest in knowing in English, let alone Spanish. Words like >>bomba de inyeccion<< (injection pump).

3 - We're hoping to cruise to the Western Caribbean next season. And since boats like to break down with a frightening regularity, I'm sure this book will come in handy.

What do you think a good sailboat name would be? What's your favorite word that starts with "V"?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!

  1. I guess if you needed to stop at a port for repairs and they spoke Spanish, that book would come in handy.

    1. I think it would be great book for that - there's lots of useful pictures and phrases.

  2. Tickety Boo is a fun name. If i had a boat, i'd have no clue what to call it. Like with naming foster kittens, i'd have to wait for it to tell me what to call it, or let my children do it.

    1. I never thought about the fact that you'd have to give names to your foster kittens. Do the new owners keep those names?

  3. If I owned a sailboat I'd probably call it MY INSANITY or WHAT WAS I THINKING. Which is not nearly as good as TICKETY BOO.

    1. I laughed out loud when I read your comment :-) Those are great names for boats because at times it seems like a really insane thing to do.

  5. I adore the story behind Tickety Boo. Dena's name suggestions made me laugh, while Sandee's are beautiful. I like the word vellum because I'm such a nut over writing utensils and supplies. ~grin~ Happy Blogging, Sailing, and Writing!

    1. Dena's comment was hysterical! Vellum is a great word. Nice writing supplies, pens etc. are a very nice indulgence.

  6. My wee cousin has named her boat Tattie Scone. It used to be Joe90 when her parents owned it, but they transferred that name to their new boat.

  7. When my daughter was younger, she probably would have named it the Princess Ballerina. That's what she named her male beta fish.
I don't know if I have a favorite V word, but some of the most romantic-sounding city names seem to start with V, don't they? Vienna, Venice, Victoria, Valencia, Versailles...

  9. I like the name Tickety Boo. I am not so crazy about the name of our boat, Blue Wing. It is a good name, but we weren't so creative back then. I think sailing and traveling make a person more creative. I love all our other names - our 3 dinks, Little Willie John, Fever, and Jethrine - and our vans, Great A'Tuin and Ballena Blanca - But I have yet to come up with a good boat name I really like. Perhaps by the time I do we will be ready for our next boat.

  10. V of Valkyrie? Would that work for a yacht that raced the storm?

    1. That's a great name for a boat. I can imagine it for a gorgeous old wooden boat with a bowspirit and a mermaid on the bow.

  11. I think Tickety Boo is a great name. My favourite V word would have to be Victoria - my DILs name.

  12. Tickety Boo is a great name and so is Kathy's book. We used it and her French one too. Our boat is named Slow Dancing, just like the way we cruise. An old cruising friend asked that I vote for her blog in another category. I stumbled upon yours so now I get to vote twice! Never stop exploring.
