Morning Coffee | Random Thoughts & Oddities

Paul at Lat43 does these hysterical Morning Tea blog posts which are a brain dump of whatever pops into his head while he's writing them. I decided to steal his idea. Except, I'm drinking coffee while I write this and he drinks tea, so it isn't really stealing, is it?

So, here we go - all of the random nonsense floating through my head while I sip on my morning coffee.

  • I got a little bit of boat envy the other day after taking a tour of a Westerly Seahawk 34 that some friends just bought. It's the same size as ours and also has a center cockpit, so it was interesting to see how the layout differs. Pretty similar except it has amazing headroom.
  • This is the second boat they've owned (I think). We're on our second boat. I wonder if we'll be content with this one or look for another one someday?
  • Whole wheat pasta is terribly disappointing. Sure, it's higher in fiber and good for you, but it tastes like limp cardboard. I finally got rid of the whole wheat rotini that I've been storing for eons that will never get eaten. It's freed up valuable storage space for more important things like cocoa powder.
  •  I love getting emails from blog followers! A guy recently sent a note saying that he's read all of our cruising in New Zealand posts and just bought a Raven 26, which is the same type of boat we used to have when we lived there. It was so nice to hear from him and know that he's having exciting adventures in  our old cruising grounds.
  • Wunderground is a big fat liar. We had a lot of wind here the other day. You could hear it blowing through everyone's rigging creating that chorus of noise that lets you know you're in a marina. Wunderground and said the wind gusts were 11 mph, when we all knew that they had to be closer to 25.
  • So much nicer to be in a marina when it's blowing a gale out there. You can actually sleep at night and not worry about the anchor dragging.
  • Sailors often suffer from sleep deprivation.
  • I don't like to be deprived of sleep. Happy to be deprived of whole wheat pasta, but don't rob me of my Zs.
  • Did you ever go out someplace in the morning and start to worry that you forgot to brush your teeth? Or is that just me? Please tell me someone else worries about this sort of thing.

What did you think about over your morning cup of coffee, tea, or other beverage of your choice? Did you brush your teeth this morning?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!

  1. I'll consider myself lucky then.
Our area has been horribly windy this month. I guess that's March for you.
I've gone out and wondered if I remembered deodorant.

    1. Deodorant - that's another good one to worry about in the morning :-)

  2. I think whole wheat pasta is a waste of space too! I'll have more broccoli with my regular pasta...that'll make it just as healthy...right?

  3. Joker valve, huh? The guy who named it must have an ironic sense of humor.

I've never tried whole wheat pasta, because I know my hubby would turn his nose up at it. After what you've said, I might, too. But the spinach pastas are really good...

I think we've all second-guessed ourselves, whether it's about brushing our teeth or something else we do routinely. We go into auto-pilot mode while we do it and then can't remember later whether we did it or not.

    1. You're right about auto-pilot, especially when you're rushing out the door trying to get to work etc. I used to worry about leaving the iron on.

  4. I love the sounds in a marina. I once got to capture sunset at a private marina in Fall River, MA. It was one of the best most memorable experiences of my life just sitting on the dock watching the sun sink below the horizon and hearing the boats and water in the background. While I don't think I could ever own a boat, I don't think I could ever get tired of being at a marina.

And yes, I have definitely gone out in the morning and thought I forgot to do something (brush my teeth, shut the garage door, turn off the hair straightener, turn off the oven, etc…). Luckily, most of the time it either doesn't matter (teeth brushing) or I did remember to do it … I just forgot that I remembered. ;)

    1. Marinas can be really scenic. At out old marina in Auckland, people used to come and have their wedding photos taken there even though they didn't own boats.

  5. Yes, all vessels are female. Or should be.

There is great comfort in being secure to a dock when the wind is howling. I so agree with that.

I've not brushed my teeth yet this morning, but I'm enjoying my first cup of coffee. Slept in this morning and it was wonderful.

Have a fabulous day and weekend, Ellen. ♥

    1. Sleeping in can be so wonderful :-) It kind of seems foolish to brush your teeth before your coffee.

  6. It is nice to be at a marina! I don't usually worry about us dragging, but several experiences have taught me to be worried about all the other people around us. We like to forget our shoes when we go to shore. And the dog's leash. Why can't we remember the simplest things? How did we ever hold down real jobs? I'm just not sure!

    1. I think you guys have got it all figured out - you're making money while living on a boat and don't have to get dressed or brush your teeth before you start in on work if you don't want to.

  7. I guess we must dump enough stuff on our whole wheat pasta not to notice the cardboard taste.

  8. I actually don't like coffee by itself too much, except Mexican coffee. So I add a small tablespoon of Carnation Rich and creamy chocolate mix. It's decadent. Hmm good. I brush my teeth probably 3 to 4 times a day. I think it's a phobia. I hate food stuck in my teeth. Especially bacon. I love bacon. Hi, Ellen!!! Sorry I haven't been around much. Another month of poor internet and I'm back in Canada with none. What will I do???

  9. My brainwaves without morning coffee are zero, nada, flatline. I can't think in the morning at all.

  10. While i do not think i have ever forgotten to brush my teeth, i have skipped out on flossing from time to time. Brushing is one of those things i do while reading blogs in the morning, so i don’t tend to forget.

That was a good call on the whole wheat pasta. If you are looking for a healthier alternative, trying using one of those spiralizer things that makes veggies into spaghetti strings. Steam them and serve them with a good sauce and they are actually tasty.

  11. Morning coffee on the boat is my favorite time. I like thinking of where the other sailboats are going. I love marinas but they get too hot, except when it's blowing a gale. I wake up at anchor and make sure the lights look the same, often deprived I need the morning coffee so bad. But it's easy to take naps. Usually no phone ringing, no UPS deliveries out here, neighbors call on the VHF before they stop. love living the winter on a boat inthe Caribbean. Thanks for the blog!! Happy St Pattys Day!!( Sailinglostloon.com)

  12. I often brush my teeth three or four times every day and try to floss at least every other. ~rolls eyes~ Also, I like Listerine breath strips, especially before lifting weights. Breathing through the exercises is key and you never know when another gym member is about to cross through your personal space on busy days. ~grin~ Your mention of the wind surprised me that you don't have some sort of measuring instrument. Is that a thing? I'm clueless. Thank you for the chuckles!

    1. I used to love those Listerine breath strips. I thought they were the coolest things .I haven't had them in ages.

You can get a wind speed measuring instrumentation (it's called an anenometer), but we don't have one.
