Wordless Wednesday | Serious Sailing

Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:

1 - This was taken during the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race during one of their in-port races in Auckland. Scott and I were on one of the marshal boats during the race.

2 - I have to confess, I'm not all that into the technical aspects of sailing. To me, our sailboat is a sort of floating RV, which can take me to new and interesting places on the water.

3 - I was scared the Telefonica boat was going to crash into us. Then it tacked at the last minute. Phew.

What words does this picture bring to your mind when you look at it?

  1. They do look serious. Certainly not looking for a beach party.

    1. They are very serious folks! It's definitely not a leisurely sail to the beach for these guys :-)

  2. Words that come to mind? Totally confusing :)

My husband would love to get back to sailing, but his idea is more like yours: a floating RV that allows us to discover new places in a relaxed manner.

  3. One of my friends was on the American sailing team that went to the Olympics back in the 80s. He has quite a few hair-raising sailing stories to tell! Sailing is serious business.

    1. I bet those are fascinating stories! It really is serious business at that level.

  4. TOO MUCH WORK! That's what I thought of when I saw this picture.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday you rule breaker. I like that about you. ☺

  5. If I have to worry about numbers as small as .1 knot, i'm not the woman for you. Slow and steady. We aren't named Galapagos by accident.

  6. There's a lot of cables/ropes going on there. I'm glad they didn't crash into you.

  7. That's how we explain our cruising to non-cruisers.... we have a floating RV. I'm too much of a klutz to ever consider serious sailing. I can "see" it now..... tripping, wrapping a line around my hand, getting hit by the boom..... uh, no thanks.

    1. I find the floating RV analogy works well too with non-cruisers. That helps them "get" it.

  8. Trip hazard. That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture.

    1. Absolutely! I would be the one tripping everywhere and falling overboard.

  9. That is a nice close-up! Almost as if you are in their rigging! :-) I am not a pure sailor either and enjoyed our sailboat more as a means to get to tropical islands and as a floating home. :-) I hear ya!

    1. It sure felt like we were in their rigging, they got so close to us. A bit scary.

  10. Funny, but when I think of sailboats, I never think of something this complex!

    1. They certainly have a lot going on racing that boat.

  11. Pulling and holding those ropes at the right time is the key to sailing I suppose.

    1. Definitely. And letting go of them at the right time too. Thanks for popping by :-)
