Marina Life On A Bulletin Board

How do you know when it's busy season at Indiantown Marina? It's easy to tell. There are lots of Canadian license plates in the parking lot. You have to wait in line for the bathroom. There are empty beer cans on the patio tables in the morning. The washing machines are always in use. And the bulletin board is chock full of notices.

I kind of think that the bulletin board at Indiantown Marina offers a little glimpse into marina life. It's up by the marina office, right next to the dryers. This picture reminds me that I used to think it was weird to do laundry outside. Now it seems perfectly normal.

Here's the main bulletin board. It gives you something to read while you're waiting for the ladies room.

This notice makes me a sad - a missing cat. There were two cats aboard this boat that went missing. One was found, but I don't think this one has been yet.

Have a look at the card for Ristorante Beppe above the missing cat notice. I think this place is in Italy. It would take you a long time to get there from Florida on your boat. And right below it is a flyer for an introductory HAM radio class. A number of sailors have their HAM licenses, including me. The exam was a nightmare full, of 800 fun-filled technical questions. That's something I don't want to go through again.

This is another odd thing to see in Indiantown - a pamphlet for the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, right next to a card for a guy who can help you out with your hydraulic hoses.

There's lots of stuff for sale.

I met the guy selling this stuff while I was getting my clothes out of the dryer. He just completed a solo five-year circumnavigation. His wife flies in and meets him at various ports. Turns out he reads our blog. The thing I'm most fascinated by that he has for sale are the "tubs full of boat stuff." What kind of goodies are inside those tubs?

And the thing people are most excited about is the Thanksgiving celebration, which kicks off on Saturday with a Beatles tribute band. The marina owner puts on several days of festivities, including free food, drinks, dinghy racing, and bands, all culminating in lunch on Thanksgiving Day.

Do you have a bulletin board? What kind of stuff do you put on it? Are you celebrating American Thanksgiving? If so, how?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!

  1. I want you take me to the ristorante beppe! Will you? I really enjoy your anthropological writing on marina life and other things about sailing culture.

    1. Kali, your comment cracked me up! I never thought about our blog as anthropological. I guess that PhD finally came in handy :-)

Pack your bags, grab the family and let's all set sail to Europe.

  2. I love mysterious boxes/tubs! You never know what you'll find. So many story ideas. :)

And I know it's the "season" around here because traffic increases so much so it makes me not want to leave the house at all.

    Have a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration!

    1. I should go poke around and see what is in those tubs - there probably are lots of great story ideas hiding in there.

  3. I have some of those mystery tubs around here :) Nice way of looking at the community, through the bulletin board. Best I ever saw was a pair with instructions at the top. One read "No Staples No Tape No Politics No Whining No Stradamus". The other read "No Staples No Tape No Politics No Puling No Sepickers." You sort it out :)

  4. That's really cool. You should ask the guy what's in his boxes of boat stuff. It would kill more time.

Hope the lost kitty has been found.

I might actually celebrate American Thanksgiving, since I was in the US during the Canadian one.

  5. There is a bulletin board at our marina too and it has about the same things. Lots of boating stuff for sale. It's the way of things at a marina.

Yes, we are celebrating Thanksgiving. Just hubby and I but we'll have a fine meal and spend the day being thankful.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

  6. I have a bulletin board here in my office, and it contains a mish-mash of favorite photos, cartoons, ticket stubs, and newspaper clippings.

I didn't know you were a ham. Cool. Me, too. I found the advanced class test and the 20 WPM Morse code test the toughest, but I'm not nearly as active on the air as I used to be.

    1. I've never used my ham license and have forgotten everything I learned :-(

  7. We met a young French family, and we will be hosting a Thanksgiving Holiday dinner with them. They are very excited to try new American food. I should take photos when they bite into pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top.

  8. Tubs full of boat stuff sounds like a bit of a lucky dip. You don't know what you're going to get. Maybe that's the fun part!

  9. That Thanksgiving dinner sounds like a good time! I can't believe it is free as well! And, a week of events leading up to it. You won't be bored.

I recognize some familiar business cards on one of the bulletin boards. :-) Nice to have laundry machines this close by, but I can imagine that the lines can be big this time of the year.

    1. I spoke with a woman the other day who had taken one of the cards off the board and was very interested in checking the Wirie out :-)

  10. Tubs of unknown treasures are fun. I've found the oddest things in stuff like that.

It's funny how hodge-podge bulletin boards can be. I like to gaze at the one at our feed store (for the animals), while waiting for the workers to load my truck.

Yep, Thanksgiving is a must here and nice now that we've moved back form overseas and can spend it with family. Except that my mother suddenly decided to make everyone where turkey hats about two years ago. The legs dangle down either side of the head. I'm really not sure what to think of that, but playing along definitely insures a lifetime of memories :)

  11. Fascinating, all! Sorry about missing pets. That always makes *me* sad, too. The busy season sounds like no fun, though the holiday festivities seem like a good time. Enjoy! Thanks for stopping by my blog. I am in the minority (as usual) for my enjoyment of sousse, brought to the United States by my German ancestors. Oh, and by the way, it's cool your mother reads your blog. ~grin~ My mom, who passed away last summer(and end to suffering, I'm glad to say) always feared she would break a computer if she tried to use it!

    1. My mom's family is part German, but I have to say that I'm glad that they didn't bring sousse with them :-)

  12. David LOVES bulletin boards and hardly ever passes up an opportunity to read one for the same reason, I think (they tell you so much about a place). As far as Thanksgiving goes, all I can say is we're still recovering -- too much family, fun and food! I hope you and Scott had a good one!
