Wordless Wednesday | Fishy Russian Roulette

Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:

1 - We recently helped a friend bring his boat back from the Bahamas to Florida. He's a keen fisherman and put his line out every chance he got. While he didn't get the much hoped for mahi-mahi, he did get a couple of snapper and a barracuda.

2 - Scott and I have always been a little worried about eating certain kinds of fish in the Bahamas due to the possibility of contracting ciguatera poisoning. I know people who've had ciguatera and it sounds just awful - gasterointestinal and neurological symptoms can last for years.

3 - Snapper (like the one pictured above) can carry ciguatera, but if you eat smaller specimens, then your risk is supposedly lower. We did end up eating this one and the good news is that everyone survived.

What words does this picture(s) bring to your mind when you look at it?

  1. I had no idea about ciguatera, but YIKES! Makes me glad I don't eat fish. Looking at the first photo, I saw the water first. So pretty!

  2. I had never heard of ciguatera until reading your post! Yikes! Guess if I ever make it to the Caribbean I'll need to be careful my husband doesn't get it. (I don't eat fish.) How long does it take to get from the Bahamas to Florida?

    1. How long is a piece of string :) Seriously, it depends upon your boat, weather conditions, where you're starting from and crossing to. When my hubby and our friend left Florida to the Bahamas it was 39 hours between anchor up and anchor down. That was due to weather issues causing them to change plans as to where they would go, light wind later making for a slow sail and other factors. We've had other crossing that have been much shorter.

  3. Never heard of it either. Now I will be wary.

    1. It's scary and it's also in the US food chain now. So you aren't necessarily safe eating reef fish anywhere these days.

  4. Now that I've read what you said about eating fish here, I'm not eating any fish caught in these waters.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥

  5. It's sad how many types of seafood are dangerous now. I miss it but glad I don't eat it anymore.

  7. If there's such thing as a beautiful fish, that one qualifies. I didn't think it was real at first.
