R Is For "Rizos" {Reefs} | A To Z Challenge

In my ongoing efforts to learn Spanish, I'm highlighting a different Spanish word each day as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I'm also sharing the random thoughts that pop into my head when I try to pronounce them.

* * *

Today's Spanish word is >>rizos<< (reefs). And now for some random thoughts:

1 - In certain conditions, you need to reef your sails, which involves reducing the amount of sail you have out so that you're not overpowered. For our mainsail, we use reefing lines to fold the sail down on the boom.

2 - >>Rizos<< can also mean curls, which makes sense as when your sail is reefed, it's curled up in a way.

3 - When it's humid out, my hair gets curly. When it's super humid out, I get little ringlets. If you're not sure what the weather is like outside, just have a look at my head.

Do you have straight or curly hair? What's your favorite word that starts with "R"?

  1. And i am sure sailing around reefs can be tricky. Is that when you most have to reef your sails, i wonder? If that’s a dumb question, remembwer i do not know how to sail a boat or ship, only how to enjoy being on one that someone else is controlling!

    1. Sailing around/near reefs is terrifying for me. We had to do a lot of visual navigation in the Bahamas where I was in charge of spotting potential dangers so we could alter course. You need to reef your sails generally when the wind gets too strong and can overpower your boat. By reducing the amount of sail you have out, you can control things better.

  2. I know nothing about sailing. Power boats yes, sailboats no. I can operate our boat just fine and do so often.

    My hair is short and straight.

    Have a fabulous day and weekend, Ellen. ♥

  3. Have always been thankful for some curl in my hair. Wash your hair, shake your head, and off you go...well sort of! Have not lived a life around boats and admire your experience and expertise.

    1. If it's not humid, my hair is quite straight. I kind of like it when it has a little wave in it. Makes it look a bit fuller.

  4. And I thought reefs were coral formations. For me R is relationships as they are key to life, and in my case R for remission - those moments when health eases.

    1. They are that as well. I think you've picked the best word of all - remission.
