Provisioning With Boys

I went provisioning with boys yesterday.

It can be challenging enough to go grocery shopping with just your husband, but add in another guy, and a long list of supplies that they need to get for the boat and you might just need an extra large chocolate bar at the end of the expedition to recuperate.

Scott is helping a friend take his boat over to the Bahamas. It's a win-win. Scott gets to go sailing and our friend gets to tick an item off of his bucket list. I'm going to stay behind on our broken boat on the hard and try to finish off the next book in my cozy mystery series, Poisoned by the Pier.

But, back to provisioning -- which, by the way, is just fancy sailor lingo for stocking up on groceries and adult beverages before you head off cruising.

I organized their grocery list into categories so that we could try to make the trip as efficient as possible.

First off was a stop at the bank cause cash is king in the Bahamas. The Bahamian dollar is on par with the US dollar and you can use American currency interchangeably with Bahamian currency which is nifty.

Then, we stopped off at West Marine because of course the day before you're due to set sail you remember something else that you forgot to get for the boat.

It seems like everyone from Indiantown Marina was at the West Marine in Stuart while we were there. A million dollars later, we headed over to Waldi, which is what we like to call Walmart and Aldi. They're right next door to each other. Walmart is good for some things, but Aldi is where we like to spend most of our money.

Note to self: Do not go shopping at Waldi on Sunday afternoon. Chaos. Too many people, too many carts, too much of everything.

When you go provisioning with boys, the first order of business is stocking up on beer. After that, they chucked a mattress pad cover in the cart. I'm hoping there isn't any sort of correlation between the two.

Toilet paper was also purchased. Not enough in my opinion, but then again, I'm not a boy.

We also pretty much cleared out the instant mashed potato section. I guess you can never have enough beer or mashed potatoes.

The groceries have been stowed. The docklines have been untied and the boys are making their way to the Abacos. Scott will get our friend situated in Marsh Harbour, then fly back. Do you think I should serve him mashed potatoes for his welcome back dinner?

Do you like mashed potatoes? What do you think constitutes enough toilet paper?

  1. It's good to have a list when you're shopping for a cruise. If you forget something essential you're stuck. We usually have two four packs on our boat and that works for us.

Do not feed Scott mashed potatoes when he gets back home. He won't find it amusing.

Have a fabulous day and week, Ellen. ♥

  2. They run out of toilet paper and I bet they won't think it's enough then.
Instant mashed potatoes are disgusting. Serve him those only if you are really unhappy. Better yet, serve them to Simon.

  3. Be super nice - serve him pizza and craft beer. Or tell him that's what you would've served him had he gotten home before you ate it.

My husband doesn't like to take me to the grocery store as we come home with twice what was on the list. LOL

  4. If you have to serve him mashed potatoes, make them yourself. Best to skip that.

All stores are too crowded on weekend afternoons.

  5. My husband is the worst to shop with if you want to stay on a budget. He is like shopping with a kid who skipped dinner.

I'm accepting of instant potatoes, but prefer real. And I agree with you, you can never have too much toilet paper.

  6. I always have plenty of toilet rolls and, as I'm the only one that ever seems to restock the bathrooms from my stash I have only myself to blame if we ever run out. As for the welcome home meal - probably depends if all goes to plan and you're glad to see him then definitely not mashed potato but if there are any hiccups or he starts telling you how wonderful it all was etc etc then I think you would be forgiven for throwing mashed potato at him lol

  7. If that shot of the grocery list shows the list the guys made, I am duly impressed. I can guaran-darn-tee ya that if my hubby made a list, it would NOT include things like sweet potatoes, squash and carrots!

As for toilet paper, no, you can NEVER have too much. It's acceptable to run out of some things, but t.p. ain't one of 'em.

  8. I actually like instant potatoes... I guess I'm odd like that, but you should probably not serve them as a welcome home meal.

  9. I guess mashed potatoes are great in emergencies for various reasons. As is toilet paper, so I'd want to have enough of that. But as you said...'boys'. They'll just moan and whine when they realize they've run out. I think that shopping trip deserved 2 chocolate bars on your part.

  10. I had instant mashed potatoes at dinner tonight...coincidence?

As for toilet paper, I stock up at Costco. One can never have too much, and the cheap stuff is so not worth it!

  11. It's been ages since I had mashed potatoes, but when I did, it was the instant kind with cheese. :)

And you can never have too much toilet paper.

  12. I bet the mattress pad was not on your shopping list? Never in my life have I eaten (or maybe unbeknownst to me I have) mashed potatoes from a box. I definitely never make them that way or have bought them that way. Note to you - which I have done many times to self - don’t go shopping during the weekend! :-)

Enjoy your me-time (I could use some of that these days) and good luck finishing book 3!

  13. If that is all the beer they got in the cart, I know Greg would be telling the guys that's not nearly enough.

I always came back from the Bahamas with TP. We would buy two of the largest packs you can buy (36 packs, maybe 48?) and always come back with nearly a full pack.

  14. Hey, there it good to be here. I would like to suggest a link where you can go through regarding different types of pipes and light mast.
