Wordless Wednesday | Turkey Vultures

Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:

1 - We've been trying to go for a walk every morning. Along the way, we often run into the neighborhood turkey vultures.

2 - I always think of turkey vultures as the thugs of the avian world. Not the type of bird you'd want to run into in a dark alley.

3 - Here's a bit of strange trivia about turkey vultures that Google offered up: "Nestling Turkey Vultures projectile vomit to defend themselves." Gross, but I guess you got to do what you got to do to defend yourself.

What words does this picture(s) bring to your mind when you look at it?

  1. Vomiting worked in The Exorcist.

We have them around here. They are just massive. All wing.

  2. It has to be "eerie" - that's how I'd feel if I walked past them, but I suppose you get used to it!

    1. I get a little unnerved when they just stare at you and don't move out of the way until the very last minute.

  3. I always wanted to take pics of the turkey vultures on our morning walks in Indiantown, especially when you see them just hanging out in parking lots.

Just think, if you were a turkey vulture had lots of enemies you'd be super skinny!

    1. Scott has some pics of them hanging out by the trash cans at the parking lot behind that building with the green grocer.

  4. They are most ugly, but vultures always are. They go good work, and I don't want to get close enough for the projectile puking. Gross.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥

  5. Ah. Nature. Yuck.

Vomiting would definitely scare me away if the turkey vulture itself didn't look quite so menacing.

    1. I know they serve a purpose in the grand scheme of things, but they aren't my favorite birds.

  7. Like ants, they are nature's clean-up crew. Kind of like an ugly vacuum cleaner.

    1. Ugly vacuum cleaners - great way of thinking about them.

  8. I actually like seeing the turkey vultures soaring above looking to "clean up" after some poor victim of a predator! They are like winged garbage collectors cleaning up after messy eaters.

    1. Better them than us when it comes to cleaning up the carcasses :-)

  9. We have a large nesting of them around the corner in the next valley, and they circle overhead quite often in Spring. Now, I'm going to be covering my head for fear of falling vomit. ;)

    1. We'll all need to wear protective hats around vultures from now on.

  10. Hmmm, if I saw a bunch of vultures hanging around somewhere I was walking, I believe I'd walk a little faster. You know, to remind them I ain't dead yet...

  11. Our neighborhood is a huge gathering place for red headed vultures. We think it's because of the elevation over town and the fact we're between Interstate 75 and the Little Miami River, both great avenues for an updraft. Once there were over forty in a single large tree (sadly, the neighbor had to remove it a few years ago). Oddly, this year they stayed over a month longer than usual. I saw one on my way to the gym just this morning, in fact. The creature looked cold and lonely. lol They're actually very social in their flocks, called a wake (as in a funeral), which I find way cool. But if you want to talk thugs of the avian world it's the black headed vultures who will gang up on and kill calves! That would be an awful thing to see even if I'm not likely to become a vegetarian anytime soon. Heh... Be well!
