Three hurricanes in the Atlantic - Florence, Isaac, and Helene, plus something else brewing in the Caribbean which could impact Texas and Louisiana. It's pretty awful to see what's headed toward the Caribbean islands and the States right now. Especially when we just had the one year anniversary of Hurricane Irma.
Fortunately, Florida isn't in Hurricane Florence's path so we and our sailboat aren't in any danger. Unfortunately, many other people are in the cone of destruction. It's just gut-wrenching to read people's updates about prepping their sailboats, moving them to secure locations (if they can get to one), hauling their boats out (if they can find a place that can take them), making plans for evacuation, and worrying where she'll strike and if their boats will survive.
And that's just our boating friends - there are so many people on land in danger as well. Our thoughts are with everyone watching and waiting and prepping for what may be headed their way.
Are you in the midst of hurricane prep? Is there any place less prone to natural disasters? Have you been through a natural disaster?
Yes, we raided the store for water yesterday since Florence is headed straight for us.

Are you on the Gulf side of the state? When I looked at the 5 day outlook on the National Hurricane Center, it looks to be headed westward toward Texas, so Florida should be okay. At least for now.
DeleteYes, we're over on the Gulf side of FL. And so far, so good for us. But I'm still keeping the NHC page up on my computer, just in case.....

ReplyDeleteI'm not sure exactly what you mean, Kevin. Are you talking about boaters? Hurricanes can strike anywhere. It's hard to know where will be safe these days. They even strike outside of the hurricane box. Last year, even though we're in a hurricane hole, we were in danger of getting hit by Irma. Even once you know that one is headed your way, you may not be able to move your boat in time. It's a tough one - doesn't seem like there are many places safe from natural disasters :(
DeleteThe Atlantic hurricane season typically runs between August and October. If one knows that to be the case... as it always is... why would anybody hang out in that area at that time? Of course some people live there, but if you have a choice and you know in advance that this happens every year...? I just don't get it.
DeleteIt's headed straight for our coast. I was supposed to speak at a writers' conference in Virginia Beach, which they are NOT cancelling, but I don't think I'll be driving through a hurricane to get there.

DeleteWe are praying the storms die down and don’t cause near the amount of damage feared. We pretty well try to stay storm ready so there’s no rushing around needed.

I think you're right. Doesn't seem like there's anyplace immune from some sort of natural disaster whether it's fire, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes etc.

ReplyDeleteI reckon just about everywhere has potential for some sort of disaster, but the closest thing to one we've experienced here was a tornado back in '98. Scary stuff.

DeleteThe hurricane has left us a bit homeless. Our latest house sitting gig (coincidentally at Paul and Vikki's again) were going to be driving north through North Carolina and Virginia to DC and were concerned about getting caught up in evacuation traffic - so they delayed their trip and decided to head south instead leaving two days late. So we are bunked up with a friend.
