Y Is For "Yate" {Yacht} | A To Z Challenge

As part of my ongoing efforts to learn Spanish, I'm highlighting a Spanish word each day during April as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I'm also sharing the random thoughts that pop into my head when I try to pronounce them.

****

Today's Spanish word is >>yate<< (yacht). And here are today's random thoughts:

1 - In New Zealand, ordinary sailboats are referred to as "yachts." The tiny boat we had in New Zealand was referred to as s/y Rainbows End, with the "s/y" standing for "sailing yacht. In the States, we use "s/v" instead, meaning "sailing vessel." So our current boat is referred to as s/v Tickety Boo.

2 - When I think of yachts, I think of big, monstrous boats that cost a fortune to run and have a staff of people to tend to your every need.

3 - We saw a lot of mega-yachts cruising in the Bahamas. Most of them are chartered out. The crews work really long hours in the hopes of really good tips.

Have your ever been on a mega-yacht? Would you like to own one? What's your favorite word that starts with "Y"?

  1. I never fail to learn something new. Your post reminds me of the silly movie "Overboard" with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. I adore those two together. Be well and Happy Sailing!

    1. I remember that movie - it was very cute :-)

    2. I agree about the movie. Thanks for commenting on my blog posts. It tickled me to make you laugh. My husband refuses to read my writing, having said it would get him too deep into my head. Weird, huh? I envy those who can share their art. Meanwhile, I may be focused but I'm also afraid to share my love child of a series with the world. ~shakes head~ I agree with you about shipping costs and tormenting characters. ~grin~ Sad to say, I also said and (even worse) did some regrettable things in my first real relationship. Fortunately, he reached out to me through my pen name of all things (!) and accepted my apology. Sad to say, he stopped communicating after asking for a current photo of me. I like to think his wife put a stop to his messaging me. ~evil grin~ Of course it could be seeing me as a middle aged fat lady freaked him out. Heh...

  2. You and I think the same thing when we think of yachts. We have a small motor boat. A dinghy if you will compared to these mega yachts. I'm good with that because I can afford my motor boat.

Have a fabulous day, Ellen. ♥

    1. That's funny :-) Our boat is like a dinghy in comparison too.

  3. When I think of yachts, I think of a luxury house boat. Not necessarily well staffed, but definitely well stocked and comfortable. In my mind once you add servants and cooks, it becomes a cruise ship. So interesting how different people look at the same word and think different things!

    1. Good point - everyone puts their own spin on certain words. Part of what makes life interesting.

  4. I have actually been on a super yacht before and you're probably familiar with the owner. We'd sailed up to Tonga one year and Graeme Hart (New Zealand's richest man -- owns Whitcoulls, New World grocery stores and some other things)was there. We got to spend a couple of nights aboard Ulysses with the crew on a trip to the Ha'apai group. As nice as it was, I think my favourite bit was the full-time chef!

    1. That would have been fun! Yep, I certainly have heard of him. I wouldn't mind a full-time chef on board our boat.

  5. When I was younger, my uncle took my brother and me out on his motor boat. He liked to go "wake hopping" and we would laugh and shriek as the boat bounced through the wakes of larger boats. We never fell overboard either. Those were the days =)

    1. That's the sort of thing that I probably would have enjoyed as a kid. Nowadays, the jarring from smacking into the wakes would be a bit much.

  6. Although i’ve been on motor boats and cruise ships, i’ve never been on what we in the US would term a yacht, super or otherwise. It might be nice to go on one once, to see what it’s like,

  7. Never been on one. I'd like to go for an afternoon but wouldn't want to own one.

    1. Me neither - way too much work and money to own one of those.

  8. Our 24 foot trailer sailor we used to call a yacht. After all it had bunks, a galley and two full time chefs (my husband and myself). Most importantly for our definition of a yacht, it had sails.

  9. The year that we checked in at West End, Grand Bahama, we saw Judge Judy's yacht, Triumphant Lady. It was very big and yacht like. Apparently the boat and it's crew just hangout at West End waiting for her to take a break from admonishing people and go cruising.

Once when we were anchored in Lake Worth and met a New Zealander who referred to sailors as "Grotty Yachties." It's fun to say, "Grotty Yachties" and now I get it.

  10. Yacht makes me think of a large ship, not a smaller vessel too. Weekends In Maine

  11. Living in a land-locked country we don't have space for mega yachts ;-))) You'd have to go to Southern France and Monaco to spot some fancy ones.
However, our Swiss "Alinghi" team was very successful winning the America's Cup in 2003, a year our skiers did not do well at all. So the running gag was "we are a sailing nation now" for a while ;-)

    1. I remember when they won the America's Cup. Of course most of the crew wasn't Swiss :-) It was quite controversial in New Zealand.

  12. Owning a yacht would be really cool, isnt it? Also, I think "Y for Yacht" brings back lot of childhood memories.

  13. We were watching a BBC show, Last Tango in Halifax, the other night, and one of the characters said, "It's all tickety boo." We both OHHH-ed out loud, someone actually uses that term! Haha, I know in your sphere, it's probably normal, but we had never heard it before. :-)

  14. I've never been at sea on a mega-yacht, but when I was a film/TV producer, I went on a few during the Cannes festivals to try and raise funds - distribution companies hired them to promote themselves.

But to me, yachts are the sailing boats that we sailed in the Solent - well some of them.
