U Is For "Usina" {Factory} | A To Z Challenge

In my ongoing efforts to learn Spanish, I'm highlighting a different Spanish word each day during April as part of the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. I'm also sharing the random thoughts that pop into my head when I try to pronounce them.

* * *

Today's Spanish word is >>usina<< (factory). And now for some random thoughts:

1 - I studied French and a lot of Spanish words are similar. Factory in French is >>usine<<. Having studied another Romance language makes learning Spanish easier in some ways, but harder in others. I'm bound to confuse the spelling of factory now in both languages - does it end with an "a" or an "e"?

2 - Factories make me think of tools. Tools make me think of boat projects. Boat projects make me think of naps. Naps are a good way to escape from boat projects. One can always hope that the elves will magically fix everything while you're sleeping.

3 - When I typed "elves," I started thinking about Keebler's cookies. Marketing is a powerful thing. I'll always associate elves with cookies.

Have you ever worked in a factory? Do you like to take naps? What's your favorite word that starts with "U"?

  1. Just to confuse you more: we don't use that word in Spain! In Spain, we use mostly fábrica or factoría :D

    1. Oh, now that is confusing :-) I wonder if it's more of a Latin American term or maybe it's just a term that's outdated which no one uses.

  2. I once worked in a factory that built industrial sized chicken egg incubators! Despite Eva's fun and confusing contribution, I have a theory that might help. Isn't it more rare for an American Spanish word to end on the letter E? I could be wrong. Be well!

    1. I'll have to investigate the use of letter Es in Latin American Spanish - very interesting :-)

Industrial sized chicken egg incubators sounds like quite the sight. I'm trying to picture them in my head.

  3. I've never worked in a factory. My parents did, but not me.

I'm not much of a nap taker. I know I will when I get older, but right now it's rare.

Understanding is my favorite "U" word today.

Have a fabulous day, Ellen. ♥

    1. Understanding is an excellent word choice. We could do with more understanding of each other in the world.

  4. I've never been one for naps (or factory work), even when I was a kid. But like you, whenever I see or type the word "elves" I think about the Keeblers (and their tree factory). I don't like their cookies (except the Grasshoppers), so my next thought usually jumps to Jeff Sessions. I let that one simmer for a bit and leave you with my favourite "U" word: umbrella because it's so fun to say.

    1. I don't think I've ever had a Grasshopper cookie. Must investigate :-)

  5. I always think of cookies when I think of elves too! :) I worked in a plastics factory for one month in a summer when I was going to college. Never again. It paid well, but it was monotonous work.

    1. So glad it's not just me who has the elves-cookie association going on. Monotonous work isn't a lot of fun so it's good that it paid well.

  6. Cookies. That's what is still on my mind. Is it the marketing or is it the cookies? Could they make adorable broccoli cooking bears that make us crave broccoli?

    1. Yes!! Why don't they do that? I really wish I would crave broccoli and lentils and all of that stuff that's supposed to be good for you.

  7. As a student, I worked one summer in a factory attaching handles to paint tins. Sit me in front of that machine and I could do it today. With my eyes closed.

    1. What an interesting job. I guess I never thought about how the handles got attached.

  9. And, now we have the association - factory=tools=boat projects=napping=elves=cookies. So, usine may mean factory, but it equals cookies?
    Just kidding. :)

    1. Well, it does now :-) I will forever think of cookies whenever anyone says usine.

  10. I used to work in a textile mill, although it wasn't an active mill when I worked there - part of it had been converted into a bar/music club, which is where I worked. The interesting thing is when it was a real working mill, my grandfather worked there.

    1. I can see why you take naps - shame about your health issue :-(
