Wordless Wednesday | Old Signs
Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:
1 - I wonder how people decide what to name their businesses. Like the Sunshine Cafe & Bar. Were the original owners super cheerful people? Does it never get cloudy in this neck of the woods?
2 - I can't figure out what the gold circle on the Whirlpool sign is all about. It looks like some sort of halo. I asked Mr. Google what he know about it and he wasn't very helpful. Although, he did direct me to this cool site with old Whirlpool advertisements.
3 - What did we do before Mr. Google when we wanted to know something? Oh, yeah. We looked things up in the encyclopedia.
4 - I'm starting to sound like an old person with my reminiscing about encyclopedias. {Sigh}
What words does this picture(s) bring to your mind when you look at it?

Before Google, looking things up was a pain in the you-know-what.
ReplyDeleteThat old cafe sign makes me think of Vegas.
It really was an ordeal to look things up. Nowadays, it's so easy.
DeleteWhat is an encyclopedia? I am just kidding :)
ReplyDeleteHahahaha.
DeleteI think there are a lot of young people who may never have seen one :-)
DeleteI had encyclopedias when my son was growing up so he could do his homework. Well that and the library. We managed and I'm guessing our searches were true instead of the maybe true and maybe not true of today's searches.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day. ♥
I remember having to go to the library to do research for school. Now, I'm guessing kids can do it all at home from their computer.
Deleteon my place it's called wikipedia, we learn about a lot of thing through that site :)
ReplyDeleteWikipedia is great :-)
DeleteEncyclopedia? Do you mean Wikipedia? ;)
ReplyDeleteI remember my parents having an entire shelf full of a Encyclopædia Britannica set. I recall actually using them for school projects back then. Now, it's much easier to ask Google and have it do all the flipping of pages and scouring of text for me.
We had a shelf of encyclopedias too. It was the go to shelf for school projects.
DeleteI didn't use encyclopedias when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteBut I did ask my grandparents questions.
Ah, grandparents - the ultimate encyclopedias!
DeleteThey really are. I love it!
DeleteI think that halo thing is supposed to be a pool whirling around. It would be interesting to know why some businesses got their names.
ReplyDeleteI liked encyclopedias. I used to read them cover to cover. Weird, right? :)
I don't think that's weird at all. I used to enjoy flipping them open to random spots and reading about random things.
DeleteIt does look like a double whirlpool.
ReplyDeleteWe had encyclopedias when I was younger. Funk & Wagnalls. Best we could afford.
A double whirlpool makes sense.
DeleteWe still have two full sets of encyclopedias, plus quite a few yearbook updates. Yeah... I need to weed out some of our stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteTwo sets of encyclopedias? You guys must be very smart, well-informed people :-)
DeleteYour first sign reminds me of Old Route 66, which runs through Albuquerque where we currently are house sitting. Imagine traveling the world with an encyclopedia.... I know some people (who home school) have them on their boat, but, in a camper??
ReplyDeleteThat's a really interesting idea for home schooling. It makes a lot of sense when you don't have easy internet access.
DeleteGreat signs! They make me think of "American Pickers" which SO likes to watch. I did enjoy the last one, and Mike and Frank seem like super nice guys, but sometimes I feel like there is nothing new to see. Or old, I guess. ~grin~ Be well!
ReplyDeleteI've seen a couple of episodes of American Pickers. Fun show :-0
