Wordless Wednesday | Nautically Themed Roman Mosaics
Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:
1 - We have tons of pictures of Roman mosaics. It was hard to pick just a few to share, so I went with those that had a nautical theme. I think my favorite is the one of the dude with crab claws coming out of his head.
2 - Would you ever have the patience to place a gazillion tiny tiles to make a picture? It's truly impressive.
3 - Scott took some of these pictures at the Bardo National Museum in Tunisia. I was amazed at all of the Roman mosaics they had in their collection.
What words does this picture(s) bring to your mind when you look at it?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!
I think they are awesome, but I don't know if I would be able to do a mosaic. That's a lot of work and you know how lazy I am.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous Wordless Wednesday, Ellen. ♥
Definitely not a hobby for the lazy :-)
DeleteI love them. We haven't changed that much, have we?
ReplyDeleteAnna from elements of emaginette
No, you're right. We haven't changed that much in many ways. In some ways that's good, in other ways, not so much.
DeleteI like the guy with the crab claws coming out of his head, too. It seems like there has to be a story there.
ReplyDeleteMy youngest daughter would have the patience. She used to spend hours making bead necklaces just right (with those pesky, tiny seed beads). Now, she is into a dollhouse project - building, sanding, painting. I'm not patient enough for such things ... but then, I write and fuss over words.
I love dollhouses! I used to have one when I was a kid. So much fun.
DeleteThose are really pretty. I love the little octopus.
ReplyDeleteWho doesn't love an octopus :-)
DeleteMy favourite is the first one with the fish and the octopus. So real! I can almost see them swimming.
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice one.
DeleteHa ha. I first read this post title as "naughtily" themed Roman mosaics, so I was looking closely for what made them so naughty. :D
ReplyDeleteOh, that's funny! Sorry to disappoint :-)
DeleteWhen our kids were growing up, I used to enjoy making mosaic-type pictures with them. We used all kinds of seeds and dried vegetables. It was a lot of fun and good therapy, but our pictures weren't even in the same ballpark as "art." The ones you posted are super, especially the dude with the crab claws growing out of his head.
ReplyDeleteI think I remember doing something similar as a kid. Love the idea of doing it with vegetables.
DeleteThese are incredible mosaics, Ellen. I love how you picked them based on a nautical theme. I could see myself building a few of these whenever (if ever) I’m retired. It seems like a creative and fun pastime/outlet.
ReplyDeleteIt would be a great hobby for retirement. You'd have plenty of time to work on it and I imagine it would take a lot of work.
DeleteHow awesome! I don't know if I'd have the patience, but the end result just might be worth it. I like that crab headed guy too!
ReplyDeleteThe crab headed guy is cool :-)
DeleteOh, wow! Beautiful. I think I like the first one best because I adore those creatures and the tiles look more like textile. I had to do a double take after reading the title of your post. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThey do kind of look like textile :-)
DeleteBeautiful! Yeah, mosaics are probably one of those crafts that'd get left half done for me.
ReplyDeleteI did a mosaic class once, but it was working with really big pieces or tile, not these tiny bits the Romans used.
DeleteThe Romans were quite creative and clever.
ReplyDeleteThey were very innovative people.
DeleteNo words or anything, just think they are neat looking.
ReplyDeleteThey are pretty cool :-)
