Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:
1 - People give me disparaging looks when I call these things ropes. We have a lot of them on our boat.
2 - The proper term is "lines." There's an expression that there's only one rope on a boat and that's the one attached to the dinner bell.
3 - Just to make things more complicated, sometimes ropes are called "sheets."
4 - Don't even get me started on all of the other nautical terms I've had to learn. It makes my brain hurt.

DeleteI never remember which ones are called lines and which are called sheets, so I end up calling them ropes, too. My in-laws are gracious enough to forgive me and my uncle always corrects me.
ReplyDeleteFor me, what popped into my head with these pictures is that you care for your equipment well. I know most sailors do keep their lines and sheets orderly, but it's always impressive to me.

DeleteThere are a lot of nautical terms. So much so that, while writing in my memoir, I wonder whether I should give everything the leeman's names, like ropes instead of lines, windows instead of portholes and bathroom instead of head, since I want to write for a wider audience. What do you think?
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great question - one I'm struggling with myself with my mystery. I haven't figured out how to handle it. I don't want to "dumb" things down, but then again I don't want to confuse or alienate people by being too technical. For a memoir, I wonder if a glossary of some kind might be useful.
