Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo(s) without any words. But I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:
1 - When we downsized and moved onto our sailboat, we had to get rid of a lot of things including an old Adlard Coles sailing book. We took pictures as a memento.
2 - I love the old advertisements. I want a pair of those beach ballet shoes.
3 - We don't fly any burgees on our boat.
4 - Since we don't belong to a yacht club, maybe I should make our own burgee. I think I'd have our symbol be a plate of brownies.

DeleteI have flags all over the place. Four yacht clubs, officer flags and the like. I only fly two now though.

ReplyDeleteFelted, or fabric bottomed shoes/boots are now illegal in many places. They have been used for fishing, and the soles will pick up creatures - plants and can transfer them to places they don't belong. The law is meant to keep out invasive species.
I like to fly my WWS burgee, but I would love to have one made of our logo. Yacht Club....whoops, I was going to laugh, but then I googled yacht club in Alaska, and came up with quite a few. I had NO idea!
That's really interesting about the felt and fabric bottomed shoes being illegal. I can see why they do it. You'll have to look into those yacht clubs.

That is the problem with looking at old ads, you realize how cheap things were once upon a time.
DeleteBaffeez! Interestingly, one Scottish word for slippers or house-shoes is baffies. Wonder if it's just a coincidence?

Given this choice, a good burger is definitively more attractive than a pompous Yacht Club Commander Burgee.

DeleteI think there are some yacht clubs which are a bit pompous, but I'm sure many are pretty down to earth. There was one in New Zealand that Scott would go to occasionally for racing events and it was really laid back.
I prefer new sailing books above old ones, although it is funny and interesting to look at these oldies. How times have changed! I think you should come up with a logo for your blog or boat and then fly that on a home made burgee!

DeleteThese are like a glimpse into a different time. The best burgee is definitely the skull and crossbones for Penzance. Wonder if the club members have themed "dress as a pirate" days?

DeleteWe're flying 3 burgees now, including Women Who Sail, SSCA, and the Maine State Ensign, which I had custom made for our trip. Maine is one of only two states to designate a state nautical ensign, so we had to fly it as we head south...
