Wordless Wednesday | The Wonderbag

Wordless Wednesday is supposed to be about posting a photo without any words. But, I'm a rule breaker, so here are a few words:

1 -  This is the Wonderbag - a non-electric, portable slow cooker. Bring food up to the boil on the stove and pop it inside the bag where it continues to cook without additional electricity or fuel.

2 - Brilliant idea for living on a boat - keeps the boat cooler and uses less propane.

3 - It's gigantic, like a pumpkin.

What words does this picture bring to your mind when you look at it?

  2. I am so on the fence about both this and a pressure cooker. I use my slow cooker at home, but I only very rarely cook things like beans and rice, or casseroles, etc. I am tempted to get a pressure cooker but wary of the space they take up. This thing is huge, too. Sigh. Boats.

    1. I've got a pressure cooker too. If I had to pick one, I'd probably pick the pressure cooker as it takes up less space and is good for similar dishes, plus you can use it for thing you need a large pot for, like popping popcorn. But, the thing I like about the Wonderbag is that you can start something early in the morning before it gets too hot, tuck it in the bag and it will stay warm until suppertime. It is gigantic though. Much bigger than I thought it was going to be.

    2. I use them both together, bring food to pressure in the PC and then tuck it in the Wonderbag. That way you get the fast blast of very high heat initially and then the long slow cook after.

    3. What do you do with the handle of your PC? Do you just let it stick out or do you have a removable one?

  3. Very cool! We've actually been doing a lot of thermos cooking. We'd have to displace the booze to fit a wonderbag in the pantry. That would be desperate times! -Lucy

    1. Your boat is so much bigger than mine though. Exactly how much booze do you have on board :-) Maybe Hastings could use it as a dog bed when not in use?

    2. Well, we got an 8 week supply of hard liquor that has only lasted 4 weeks. We do have enough beer and wine left to last till armageddon though....
Hastings loves laying on non-bed beds. His favorite is whatever sewing project I'm working on!

    3. Uh oh, sounds like someone's provisioning estimations were a bit off. Hopefully, you stocked up enough cheese for Hastings though.

  4. We have the "Saratoga Jacks" thermal cooker, I love it. Not only do we make delicious meals, but it also makes yogurt, and cheese. We also have a pressure cooker, it's about the same size as the thermal cooker. Bill is an expert at making delicious meals in each one! I'm pretty sure we would have to ditch both of them for the size of the Wonderbag, no more room for a pumpkin.

    1. I've always been quite interested in the thermal cookers. I can't believe you can make yogurt and cheese in them - wow! Sounds you're a lucky lady with Bill whipping up yummy dishes for you :-)

  5. We bought one for the boat but haven't used it yet. I hate to cook, si any recipes/tips you wanna share are welcome.

Worried about the size in our smaller boat ... good thing it looks like a pillow!

    1. Actually, you were the reason I got one. I remember when you posted something on FB about them being on sale and I decided to get one. You'll like it once you try it out. They've got some good ideas in a little recipe booklet that comes with it and I think any soup/stew would work well in it.

  6. Looks like a giant pompon. I would have never guessed its use. Does it not fold up to store? We had a pressure cooker on our boat, but used it more often as a perfect sized pot to cook things normally in, or to store our snacks. We had less snacks then than now! Also perfect to cook lobster. Congrats on reaching 1000 Facebook likes! Awesome, Ellen!!

    1. It gets a tiny bit smaller without a pot in it, but that's about it.
