Every month, I do a random sort of recap in numbers with miscellaneous facts and figures that happen to pop into my head. So, without further ado, here's what happened last month, by the numbers.
- 49 – Number of nautical charts I scored from the free table at our marina. From what I can tell, they’re worth around $300. Our cost – $0. I love the free table!
- 7 – Number of hours I spent inventorying our free nautical charts and daydreaming about places we can sail to one day.
- 50 – How many years I’ve now spent on Planet Earth. I think my mom may be more stunned by this than me. After all, now she has a 50 year old daughter. Hah!
- 2 – Number of times I visited a sick friend at the VA hospital in West Palm Beach during the past month. If you’re ever feeling a bit down about your life, spending some time at a VA facility is a sure fired way to put things in perspective. Talking to veterans about their experiences is eye opening and very humbling. (Non-American readers might not be familiar with the VA, which stands for Veteran’s Affairs. They provide medical care and federal benefits to veterans and their dependents.)
- 2 – Number of potlucks we had at the marina. One of the things I love about potlucks is trying new dishes. One of the ladies made the most amazing pineapple salsa and banana pudding. I had never had banana pudding before and neither had the others. Turns out it’s a southern dish and us northerners have been missing out. This stuff is seriously delicious. Of course, I’m not sure you can go wrong with bananas, custard and nilla wafers.
- 980+ – Number of followers on our Facebook page as of the end of May. I’m actually blown away that we have so many people like our Facebook page. Wouldn’t it be cool to get to 1,000? Oh my goodness, I’ve become one of those people that gets excited about reaching Facebook milestones. What’s happened to me?
- 8 – Number of meatless days I had. Do you ever have meatless days?
- 1 - Number of t-shirts I turned into tank tops with my trusty Sailrite sewing machine. I thought it made sense to re-purpose what I already have and don't wear.
- 12 – The number of books I read during May. Some were for the Around the World in 80 Books challenge, others were mysteries set in the States and sci-fi set in galaxies far, far away.
- 8 – The number of books/short stories I won! I love winning stuff. Who doesn’t? I won copies of Writing in a Nutshell by Jessica Bell and Secondhand Shoes, The Partners’ Progeny, Time on Her Side and Samah Ronit by Shelly Arkon and, all courtesy of Michelle at Writer in Transit during the A to Z Challenge. I won Overlook and Escape Plan by Elizabeth Hein as part of a drawing on her blog, Scribbling in the Storage Room. But, wait, there’s more - I also won a copy of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group anthology, Parallels: Felix was Here, which I can highly recommend. I haven’t had a chance to read the other books and short stories that I won yet – it looks like June will be a busy month!
We hope you had a wonderful May full of good food, good company and good books and that this month is off to a great start and gets even better as the month goes on.

I can't seem to get past those donuts. I'm hungry and they would go so well with my morning coffee.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day Ellen. ☺
They were so good - such a decadent treat. Now the trick is not to go back and buy more.
DeleteI love that pony! And also am dead jealous of that free table. I've been on the lookout for west coast charts for when we go south. So far, none have turned up for free. Or even for a modest sum. I better turn up the heat on my magic! Banana pudding is one of my favorites. I grew up with that being a special dessert. So special that I could probably eat the entire thing. which is bad. Very bad.
ReplyDeleteI think we have the best free table in all of North America :-) I'm kind of glad I never had banana pudding before now, otherwise it might have been a problem and I would have sought it out at all opportunities.
DeleteNot so many meatless days this month, but I do love them as they push me to be more creative for our meals... nice tanktop idea!
ReplyDeleteIf you're not used to cooking vegetarian, it really does require some creativity. I have a few tried and true recipes I always make. I could probably do with adding a few more to the repertoire.
DeleteSeems I missed a birthday? Happy Golden Jubilee!
ReplyDeleteThe Glasgow Gallivanter
I'm not sure whether it sounds better or worse to think of it as m Golden Jubilee :-)
DeleteStarted following you during the Challenge. Finally having time to catch up with your posts since then. Though not a sailor, never really learned to swim properly, I loved your approach to blogging and the presentation of your "stuff." I'm posting a series of posts this June on the summertimes of our youth and how to recapture some of those moments. Hope you have time at some point to check it out. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Stepheny! I'm glad that sailing/boat stuff comes across okay to people who don't know much about it.
DeleteSince We recently made a major dietary shift to vegan for health reasons, we've had nothing but meatless days for three weeks now!
ReplyDeleteDo you feel the difference, mentally and physically? We always feel better when not eating meat for a few days!
DeleteGood on you for going vegan! That's impressive. I don't really feel a difference when I have meatless days. I feel more of a difference when I don't eat junk (like cookies, cake etc.).
DeleteReaLily enjoyed your numbers post. I love winning books, too, though there's not an extra inch of space in my apartment for one more book.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol - glad you enjoyed it! All of the books I've won have been e-books which is great as I don't have any room for any more paper books.
DeleteYou are the master finder of the free table. Congratulations on your almost 1,000 Facebook followers. Wow!I am at 70, I think! :-) Long way to go. Don't think I will EVER make that number. We usually have two meat-free days a week.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good time of year for the free table as people come back from the cruising season to store or sell their boats and put all sorts of stuff up there.
DeleteOh, i almost forgot: happy belated birthday, Ellen!!! I hope you did not have to celebrate it alone... xxx
ReplyDeleteThanks Liesbet!
DeleteHappy Birthday!! Love the t-shirt to tank top, so creative!-Lucy
ReplyDeleteIt was a creative idea, but the execution leaved a little bit to be desired. Oh well, it was one I wasn't wearing anyway so no harm done.
DeleteGood things, especially banana pudding! Hope you had a good birthday
ReplyDeleteThe banana pudding was wonderful!
DeleteI think that 50 is the new 30 :)
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally want some banana pudding!!
I definitely think 50 is the new 30 now that I've turned 50 :-)
