E Is For Ellen

During April, we're participating in the Blogging from A to Z Challenge. Every day (except Sundays), we’ll be doing an alphabet themed post starting with “A is for Adventurous” and ending with “Z is for Zinc”. We've got a theme for every letter sorted except for Y. If you have any ideas for the letter Y, please leave a comment or email.

When it came time to pick something that goes with the letter E, the first thing I thought of was me, as in E is for Ellen. But then I thought that would be boring to write about me. Not to mention insanely egotistical. So I tried to think of other things that begin with E - like elephants, eggshells and extraterrestrials. But I don't know nearly as much about elephants, eggshells and extraterrestrials as I do about myself, so I decided to take the easy out and write about myself.

I did a search for "questions to get to know someone" and selected a few from random websites. Hopefully, they're easier to answer than algebra problems. So here, we go - ten questions to get to know Ellen. (Maybe I can convince Scott to answer these too and then we can have S is for Scott in a few weeks!)

1 - What is the one thing you think should be taught in school that isn't?

Doodling. This is a really important skill, especially if you're going to work at some sort of corporate job when you grow up where you're required to sit through long, boring meetings. Doodling helps to pass the time. They really should have replaced all of those algebra classes with doodling classes. It would have been much more useful.

2 - What was your favorite activity in gym class?

I HATED gym class! This statement actually requires more exclamation points - I HATED gym class!!!!!! I remember dreading it when I was in school. I'm one of those uncoordinated, clumsy people who couldn't catch a ball if her life depended on it. And I can't tell my left from my right so I never knew what to do when the teacher yelled, "Pass to your left!" I would just freeze up, drop the ball and desperately wish for some sort of invisibility cloak so I could sneak out.

However, I do remember a brief period of time when gym class was somewhat enjoyable. And that's when we got to play with the parachute. I never did understand the purpose of the activity, but basically we all grabbed onto this giant parachute and did strange maneuvers. Fortunately, knowing your left from your right never seemed to be essential.

3 - Would you prefer to camp in an RV or a tent?

This is kind of a no brainer since we own a teeny-tiny RV. We tried camping in a tent, but middle age and tents really don't go together.

4 - If you could go back in time, what year would you travel to?

I wouldn't want to go back in time. I would much prefer to travel to the future. The kind of future you see in Star Trek where there are all sorts of interesting alien cultures to explore and planets to visit. Not the kind of future you see in Terminator where the machines have taken over everything and things aren't looking too good for humanity. If you're going to time travel, it might as well be pleasant.

5 - If you could hire someone to help you, would it be for cooking, cleaning or mowing the lawn?

We don't have a lawn and I usually don't mind cooking, so cleaning it is! Scott read this and wanted me to add that I don't mind cooking because he does most of it. Not true, but we'll let him think that's the case. Okay, maybe its a little bit true.

6 - How many pairs of shoes do you own?

I'm not actually sure off of the top of my head, but I do know it is a lot less than when I worked in an office and lived in a house. Of course, Scott still thinks I have way too many shoes. I think my current collection consists of a couple of pairs of tennis shoes, a couple of pairs of sandals, a pair of black flats, a couple of pairs of hiking boots and a pair of sailing shoes. That's seems reasonable doesn't it?

7 - What was your first job?

I worked at a pet store when I was 14. My duties involved cleaning out cages and wearing this dodgy animal costume and standing on the sidewalk holding out a sign advertising the store. I'm allergic to almost everything with fur, so I'm not sure it was the most sensible job in the world.

8 - What's your favorite movie?

I hate these "what's your favorite..." questions. I really don't have favorites. But if you force me to answer, I will say that one movie I enjoy seeing over and over is Contact with Jodie Foster. It is about aliens, religion and science. Have you seen it?

9 - If you were ruler of your own country, what's the first law you would introduce?

My first law would be to be nice to others. Seems simple doesn't it? My second law would be to provide me with a plate full of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies every day.

10 - Have you ever had a nickname? If so, what was it?

I always wanted a nickname, but never had one. For a brief period of time, I tried to get everyone to call me Skippy. No idea why. Maybe it had to do with peanut butter. It never caught on. I'm over it now.

Is there anything else you want to know? How would you answer these questions?

  1. Hi Ellen - Doodling would be a cool class, i.e., do the types of our doodles indicate anything about our personalities? I doodle triangles primarily. Nice to meet you! :)

  4. Great answer for #4! It would indeed be better to travel to the future than to the past, I mean, we can always do that through our memories and pictures and blogs!

I love your blog name, by the way! Has a really nice ring to it!

  6. This post cracked me up! I'd also like to live in Star Trek's universe, and liked Contact. Some of your other questions, like #1 and #9, are fertile challenges for future blog posts. Thanx!

  7. Hey Skippy,

Contact is also my favorite movie. I love to sail at night and look at the stars. I can't help but think of the line in the movie where Jodie Foster was asked if she thinks we are alone and she replies, "well if we are, it's an awful waste of space".

Also, we like #9. We try hard to be nice all of the time. Although, some people make it harder than it should be :)

  9. I enjoyed getting to know a bit more about you. Hereare some comments:
    # 1 - there's a Ted talk on doodling. I've become a prolific doodler and don't feel a bit guilty about it. I'm doing zen tangles. Have you heard about them?
    # 2 I'd rather have an RV, too. It is my dream to get a vintage trailer.
    # 6 You can never have too many shoes but it's too bad they take up so much space on shelves and in suitcases.
    # 9 Being nice would be the best rule and here's a quote - "No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted." - Aesop

  10. Good thing you can keep your port from your starboard, if not your left from your right! I always wanted a nickname as well, just like most people I know, but for some reason it never happened. I had one (American) boyfriend once, who couldn't pronounce my name right (few English speakers can), so he called me LB. I loved it, until I found out it also stood for lazy butt. Well, I actually still liked it after that.
