Sandcastles | Anna Maria Island, Florida

One of the first things we did once Scott came back was to go through the very long list of boat projects that we have to do before we can head off to the Bahamas.

Here's the problem with project lists - they're utterly depressing. They make you realize how much you have to do, how much it's all going to cost and how much you don't have a clue about.

What do you do when you're overwhelmed by your boat project list? You lock up your boat, get in the car and drive as far away as you can before you run out of gas. We got as far as Anna Maria Island on the Gulf Coast of Florida where we rented a cottage for a week so that we can chill out and muster up our courage to tackle the boat project list.

We've been going out for long walks on the beach while we've been here and admiring sandcastles.

This one isn't so much a sandcastle as a sand snowman.

And it wouldn't be Florida without a turtle made out of sand and shells.

There were plenty of more traditional sand castles. Some were pretty elaborate with complicated moat systems.

Do they have better sandcastle making equipment nowadays? The ones I made as a kid never looked as good as the ones we saw.

And of course, sandcastles as a reminder that everything fades with time. I wonder what this one looked like originally before the water and wind eroded it.

When's the last time you made a sandcastle or played on the beach?

Thanks for stopping by our blog - we love it when people come visit! We're also on Facebook - pop by and say hi!

  1. I play on the beach every year, but I've not made a sand castle in forever. I love to watch others do so though.

Just enjoy your time with Scott. Boat projects never end and anyone with a boat knows that.

Have a fabulous time and a very Merry Christmas. ☺

  2. Getting away for a couple days was a good idea.
My sand castles always begged for the tide to wash them away.

    1. It's been a great idea to get away from the boat, chill out and reconnect.

  3. What a nice idea to get away from the boat. Hopefully you'll get energized to tackle the list! I made sandcastles with my 11 and 12 year old nieces a few weeks ago. However, when we walked the beach, we too noticed very elaborate sandcastles. Is it more competitive now? Do kids go to classes and watch videos and get special tools? Ours looked normal, which then seemed pathetic.

    1. I still can't muster up the energy to tackle the boat project list. Hopefully, Santa's elves have been fixing everything while we've been away.

  4. The last time I took a walk on the beach was on Black Friday. It had poured down rain all day on Thanksgiving and I just had to get off the boat to stretch my legs. Love the snowman!

    1. Thanks for the link to Jo's blog. I've probably missed the boat for this week, but I'll keep her in mind for future posts. We've been doing a lot of walks, so I'm sure I'll have a few coming up about them.

  5. What a great idea to get as far away from the boat as possible for a little while! You know what I think you should do, write your boat list in sand at low tide and see which projects survive nature's actions. :-) Enjoy your time away from it all, Ellen, you deserve it!

    1. That sounds like a great approach to boat project lists!

  6. I made a sand mermaid last year in the Bahamas...does that count? I knew what it was, but I'm not sure anyone else did! Lol!

    1. That definitely counts! I'm sure it looked very mermaid like too :-)

  7. My kids and I were at Anna Maria Island on Thanksgiving day! My daughter and I are 'co-hobbying' and she was looking for shells for her beach jars and I was looking for sea glass. She was infinitely more successful than me!!
Anyway...I just discovered your blog and as it has always been a dream of mine to 'Sail Away Into The Sunset', I will definitely check out your blog!

    1. How fun that you were here recently! It's such a lovely island. I've seen plenty of shells on our beach walks, but not much sea glass. Thanks for popping by and I'll check out your blog as well :-)

  9. Walking on the beach is one of our favorite things to do!

We've been to sand sculpting competitions a few times and it always amazes me what people can create.

    1. I've seen some of those sand sculpting competitions on TV and what they create is amazing. So much work and it doesn't last very long.

  10. Can't remember the last time I made a sandcastle! It would have been a feeble attempt compared to these. I've just read Liesbet's comment and I do think her idea is brilliant for any project list.

  11. I haven't played on the beach in years. It's way too cold to build a sand castle up here. We just go with stacking rocks into cairns and calling it good. Good idea, though, to get away from the boat for awhile. You deserve that break!

  12. I last played on a beach in October of 2015. It was in Cancun, Mexico, a lovely sunny day with the usual wind blowing off the ocean into my face.

  13. I suppose that moving to the US was my version of getting away. No accessible here in Idaho, so it will have to be a snow-castle. However, did see a sandcastle the other day...and the tide wasn't touching it - but then it was a neat digital add in a Lord of the Rings game.
