Morning Coffee | Random Thoughts & Oddities

Paul at Lat43 does these hysterical Morning Tea blog posts which are a brain dump of whatever pops into his head while he's writing them. I decided to steal his idea. Except, I'm drinking coffee while I write this and he drinks tea, so it isn't really stealing, is it? Fortunately, I'm not the only copycat out there.

So, here we go - all of the random nonsense floating through my head while I sip on my morning coffee.

  • I wonder if Paul will read this. I wonder if he'll sue me for stealing his idea. He's American. Americans like to sue each other.
  • I think Paul's American. Maybe he's Canadian. Sometimes, it's hard to tell the difference. If you're not sure, ask them to pronounce "about" and what their favorite coffee and doughnut shop is. If they say "aboot" and Tim Horton's then chances are they're Canadian.
  • The Canadians should start heading back to Indiantown Marina next month. During the high season, it's about half Canadian here. Maybe more. They're fun people.
  • When I moved back to the States after years living overseas, I was reminded how different things are here. Everything tastes sweet, including the bread. And the election cycle goes on for far too long.
  • The first presidential debate is next week. I don't have a TV so it looks like I'll be missing it. I can't decide if that's a good thing or a bad thing.
  • She made them in an Omnia stovetop oven. I want one of those, but I don't want to pay for it. They're pretty pricey. I keep hoping one will end up on the free table at our marina.
  • People shouldn't post pictures of yummy looking treats on their blogs unless they plan on coming over to your boat and sharing with you.
  • I used to catch the 6:00 AM flight from Portland to Salt Lake City on a regular basis for work. The only thing that made getting up that early bearable was the fact that I would get a cinnamon scone fresh out of the oven at the airport.
  •  That's a lie. The cinnamon scones didn't really make getting up that early bearable.
  • When I would travel from Scotland to Portland for work, I used to catch the 6:00 AM flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam. That was a drag. The scones at the Edinburgh airport weren't that great. That was a really long flight. Well, three flights really. At least I got to fly business class on the company's dime.
  • I'm having oatmeal for breakfast. Not as tasty as a scone, but still pretty tasty especially if you put  brown sugar, raisins and peanut butter in it. Kind of like eating an oatmeal raisin cookie with a spoon.
  • People in other countries don't get peanut butter. Americans get peanut butter.
  • The WiFi keeps cutting out. I wonder if I'll be able to post to the blog today.
  • I need to get another cup of coffee. Don't go anywhere.
  • Okay, I've got another cup of coffee. I take mine with milk. No sugar.
  • I like how they say, "Do you want a coffee?" in British English speaking countries. Americans say, "Do you want some coffee?" Something to do with countable vs. uncountable nouns. Grammar can be fascinating at times.
  • I started reading a Regency romance set in Sierra Leone for my Around the World in 80 Books challenge. I think it's the first Regency romance I've ever read. So far, I've haven't learned anything about Sierra Leone. But I have learned that buccaneers are very dashing and irresistible to the ladies.
  • I visited Sierra Leone when I was 19. That was a really long time ago.
  • I'm not sure what a buccaneer is. Are they different from pirates? I could ask my friend, Mr Google what the difference is, but the WiFi went out again.
  • Some people who live on sailboats are into the whole pirate thing. They dress up in pirate costumes.
  • I don't like costume parties.
  • I want to try to write 3,000 words today.
  • I had to have one of the sheriff's deputies do a VIN inspection on my vehicle. He was a very serious fellow. He was pleasant enough, just really serious. I wonder what he was thinking about - maybe cinnamon scones?
  • The deputy's uniform was really crisp. Not a wrinkle on it. I've noticed that about law enforcement officers (not that I've run into that many in my time, mind you) - their uniforms are always wrinkle free.
  • What's the difference between a police officer and a sheriff's deputy? The WiFi still isn't working.
  • All of my clothes are wrinkled. I don't own an iron. That might have something to do with it.
  • My coffee cup is empty. I better go try to be productive and see if I can find WiFi.
  • I got the graphic of the kettle from the Graphics Fairy. A great site for copyright free/public domain images.

What random thoughts popped into your head today?

  1. Here's what I'm impressed with: that your mind actually connects things together in a much more organized way than mine. Or Paul's. I mean, you actually have a 'train' of thought, vs a bunch of random cars of thought. How do you do that? It must make life a little more organized somehow.

    1. The secret is to make the coffee extra strong. That gets the brain all fired up and able to connect random thoughts.

  2. Thanks for the shoutout :-) Sadly, we aren't baking at the moment due to the lack of energy and hatred of doing dishes. My random thoughts include: Why is our boat so filthy? Why are our batteries so low (it's been raining for 6 days) Will we live in Deltaville for 5 years like all the other boats who hauled for 1 week? Etc!

    1. I hope you escape Deltaville. That happens to people - they get stuck and can never leave :-(

  3. That was funny!
Believe me, it's a good thing you don't have a television.
And what's a little wrinkled clothes? If you need an iron, you can have ours. My wife never uses it and I might use it once a year.

  4. Wow, your mind is working overtime over you coffee this morning. I can answer one of those questions.

What's the difference between a police officer and a sheriff's deputy?

A police officer works in the city limits while the sheriff's deputy works the county. Kind of like the difference between a state worker versus a federal worker. Jurisdiction.

    Have a fabulous day. ☺

    1. Thanks Sandee - that makes sense. Indiantown isn't incorporated so that's why they would use the sheriff instead of having a police department.

  5. Your brain works remarkably well before you have finished your coffee, I'm a zombie.

I gave away my iron several years ago. I do not miss it. We sold our bed 2 days ago, now we are sleeping on the floor with an air mattress. The cats are confused. They will be even more confused in one week. We will be loaded up with truck, camper, and 28ft enclosed trailer with the rest of our worldly goods, leaving what they thought was home. They have never slept in the camper. It was my sanctuary from cat hair. No more.

    How's that for "Paulies" LOL

    1. Those are great "Paulies" - I like how this id catching on! Hang in there with the big move and give the cats extra treats. Give yourselves extra treats too :-)

  6. Sometimes I worry that I may inadvertently steal other people's blog ideas - but not realize it, as I read so many blogs.
Our city and county law enforcement combined, so we no longer have to decipher between the 2.
I learned how to make delicious scones when I worked at a Bakery for a year.
I rarely/never make scones because baking on the boat is a pain.
The stovetop oven is intriguing but it's made of aluminum and that makes me nervous. And I also don't want to pay for it.
Sometimes I think I am too cheap for my own good.
I always love your blog posts.

  7. great post! (First time commenter here). I grew up (and still live) in New England. We also ask if someone wants "a coffee". in fact, if anyone asks for "a cup of coffee", we know right away they didn't grow up here. (well, that plus new england accents are pretty strong but we dont ask if you 'pahked the cah is harvahd yahd' because you can't park your car there.)

    1. Hi Nancy - thanks so much for commenting! It's nice to "meet" you :-) That's really interesting about offering coffee in New England.

  8. We have a restaurant here in Gloucester called Lat 43--because that is the latitude we are at. Interesting.

    Now I want scones....

  9. That's a LOT of random thoughts. I think the election race goes on far too long, too. I intend to watch the debates. Canadians are indeed very nice people!

  10. I'm sitting in the cockpit watching the rain fall and drinking a coffee (milk and one sugar) while thinking how nice it would be to have one of those hazelnut scones that Lucy baked and counting the hours until the debate.

  11. I just had a random thought...is Ellen sure that Scott is ever coming back?

  12. We don't have TV either, but hope to watch the debates on our laptop via the internet. Maybe an idea for you, if the WiFi works enough... Although, I have to say that I am getting really annoyed at a certain candidate's popularity, no matter what he says or does. Random thought (which I have often): why don't people think for themselves anymore, or just believe whatever has been thrown at them? I can see your thought processes, Ellen. Mine are pretty similar and a mile a minute! I don't even think I could reproduce them all in words or text! :-)

    1. I'll try to watch it via WiFi, but it's usually weaker at night. If all else fails, I'll try to catch it on YouTube the next morning. You should do a coffee post. It'd be fun to read :-)

  13. Great ramble. I haven't had my first cup of tea for the day yet so still half asleep. I think we non-Americans usually ask if you want a cup of tea/coffee but then the cup gets dropped. My hubby is always correcting me if I get the quantity thing wrong in grammar as in less or fewer. He can be so pedantic at times lol

    1. That makes sense that the "cup" is implied. My mom's a bit of a grammar guru too so I know what that's like :-)

  14. That's a lot of thoughts for one coffee break! I get peanut butter, by the way, I could live on it, but American peanut butter always tastes (guess what?) too sweet to me. As for coffee, I''m confused - you know how you never think about something and then when someone mentions it, you do but a seed of doubt has been sown and you don't know the answer? I think "Would you like coffee / a cup of coffee / a coffee / some coffee?" all sound quite normal. I'll need to catch myself unawares next time I need to ask to check what I would say!

    1. When I was in New Zealand, I made some buckeyes, which are a candy made with peanut butter made even sweeter with powdered/icing sugar and then coated in chocolate. They all grimaced when they tried them thinking they were too sweet and very odd tasting.

  15. I love your random thoughts..."random nonsense floating through your head" is actually a good thing - like stream-of-consciousness writing, which they (whoever "they" is?) say helps you to discover your natural writing voice!
I TOTALLY get peanut butter - it's my "go to" snack when I'm feeling peckish!
    YES to more coffee!!

    1. Yay for peanut butter! I've been known to eat a spoonful when I'm peckish too.
