September In Numbers

Clockwise from upper left. 1 - I know you shouldn't play favorites, but I love this hatch the most because it doesn't leak. 2 - We got our Coast Guard documentation in the mail and Tickety Boo is all official now. 3 - Stuffed penguins in my mom's fridge. 4 - Frozen yogurt at Tartberry. A family tradition every time I'm back home. 5 - Yum, chocolate, yum. 6 - I'm happy to report that there are no dead bodies in our lazarette.

Wow, another month has flown by! How does that happen? I'm currently visiting my family in Portland, Oregon. It sure feels good to escape the heat, bugs and humidity in southern Florida for a while. Of course, I'm paranoid that my boat will sink while I'm gone or get swept away in a hurricane, but seeing family and having my sister bake me chocolate chip cookies makes up for it.

Here's the usual monthly recap of what I got up during September. If you want to see other monthly recaps, just click on "Month in Numbers" under the labels section on the sidebar.

  • $84 - How much it costs to return a vessel to documentation with the US Coast Guard. Tickety Boo was originally a US flagged boat and in the system, so to speak. We bought her from a Canadian couple so we had to "return" her to official US status. If you're documenting a boat for the first time, it will cost you $133.
  • 1,753 - The number of leaks we have on our boat. This is just a guesstimate on my part - there's probably a million more leaks than that. I am soooo tired of constantly running around and putting towels under all the drips. There have been days when it has rained so much that I've run out of dry towels. I guess the good news about living on a boat is that if we have another Great Flood, we can help take some of the animals away to safety on our little ark. I'm volunteering to take the cats.
  • 1 - The number of cracks of unknown origin in our head/bathroom. The likely cause is water seeping in from somewhere. We probably need to remove the panel in the head/bathroom and check things out. Sorting this out is beyond my skill-set and will probably require two people to tackle it. If I wasn't missing Scott already, I'm sure missing him now.
  • 8 - The number of days I went without any form of chocolate or other sugary treat. Hard to believe, I know.
  • Nil - The number of dead bodies in our lazarette (aka storage locker). This is a very good thing.
  • 2 - The number of penguins my mom keeps in her fridge. Her explanation is that penguins like cold temperatures and they're happier in there. I think I know where I got my strange sense of humor from now.
  • 2 - The number of giant cups of candy my nieces get when we go to Tartberry in Portland. It's a frozen yogurt place, but do they get frozen yogurt with all of their candy toppings? Nope, just candy. I like the way they think.
  • 1 - The number of pints of Hammerhead beers I had at McMenimins in Portland. I love IPA.
  • $7.68 - How much I spent on a replacement bulb for one of our spotlights. Of course, right after I bought the bulb, it started working again.
  • 2 - The number of times I've been to the library in Portland and checked books out on my mom's library card. She's paranoid that I'm going to forget to return them and saddle her with a huge fine.
  • $200 - The amount I racked up in library fines once upon a time.
  • 4 - Number of months old my sister's new tortoiseshell kitten is. So adorable! I keep trying to take pictures of her, but she won't sit still for the camera.
  • 1 - Number of kittens I want to sneak into my bag when I head back to Florida next week.

We hope you had a wonderful September and wish you an even better October!

  1. Our boat is documented too. It's way better than those ugly CF numbers. I'm just saying.

I'm sure your boat will be fine while you're in Portland. Just enjoy the cookies.

Have a fabulous day and weekend. ☺

    1. Thanks Sandee - I got a little worried when Joaquin came along, but fortunately he's heading off shore. Unfortunately, he's thrashing the Bahamas before he does :-(

  2. That's a lot of leaks, the one in the head being the most disturbing. I am just over 4 months sugar free, so 8 days is a great start. The cravings should be gone soon. And for me, chocolate and boats don't get along anyway. It is my quickest trip to seasickness.

    1. I'm in awe of the fact that you've been sugar free for four months. After eight days without chocolate, I bought the biggest bar I could find.
